So after watching "The Human Experiment" on Netflix I REALLY wanted to get rid of products that could include any kind of harmful chemicals and toxins. (Seriously, watch "The Human Experiment." It's a huge eye-opener about how products that almost everyone uses DAILY can actually cause huge health problems even though exposure is at a super low level.) Before watching this, I kind of thought people that made their own personal hygiene products were nuts, like "how on earth can the things I buy at Target actually be harmful to me? Someone is in charge of making sure these products aren't dangerous to my health, right?" Yeah, no. My assumption equates to being an uninformed consumer, but no more!
Craig uses Old Spice Classic cologne (not very often) but will put it on before we go on a date or somewhere fancy. On top of the fact that Old Spice products can give me a headache sometimes, one of the products listed on the ingredients list is 'fragrance' which can include literally thousands of different chemicals - none of which Proctor & Gamble (the company that makes Old Spice) has to disclose to ANYONE because it's a 'trade secret.' I get the whole "we don't want other people stealing our proprietary recipe" but the consumer loses all ability to be informed when they don't know if there could possibly be something harmful in what they are putting on their body and, in the case of cologne, breathing in. (Seriously, if you don't believe that the products you're buying could have harmful items in them, check out this article. In this case, the maker of this product literally cleaned up their act after YEARS of citizens lobbying for the change).
When it comes to Craig's cologne, I decided to make my very own for him :) It's super simple, cost-effective, smells AMAZING, and the best part - it doesn't have ANY chemicals in it! Can I get a Hallelujah?!
- Find a glass 10ml roller bottle (you can find them on amazon or at your local health / nutrition store, although usually Amazon is much cheaper)
- Add 10 drops Valor I (you could also use Valor II, but I personally prefer the smell of Valor I) and 5 drops of Pine or Cedarwood (I really like them both!)
- Top off the roller with a carrier oil (I would suggest Sweet Almond oil or Avocado oil - again, you can get them on Amazon or at your local grocery store)
- Roll on wrists and neck/behind ears.
- Smell AMAZING
