Cedarwood is AWESOME for a good night's rest! Adding it to my diffuser (along with Lavender and Vetiver) gets me to sleep quickly AND helps me sleep soundly through the night. It has a woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma and can be added to your favorite skin care products to help achieve smoother-looking skin. Cedarwood's distinctive aroma allows you to enjoy the outdoors annoyance-free and can even be massaged into the scalp for the appearance of healthy looking skin (yes please!).
A little Cedarwood trivia for you: the cedar wood mentioned in the Bible is from Lebanon (Cedrus libani), which has nearly been eradicated due to over-harvesting. The cedars that are used for Young Living's Cedarwood Essential Oil is from the Cedrus atlantica, also known as the Atlas Cedar. This particular specie of Cedar grows in Atlas Mountains of Morocco (hence Atlas Cedar) to the Tell Atlas mountain chain in Algeria. Some sources consider Cedrus atlantica a subspecies of the original Cedars of Lebanon - SO COOL!
The largest key constituent of Cedarwood is Alpha-pinene. Alpha-pinene is a type of terpene and is commonly found in the oils of coniferous trees (makes sense). One of the principal properties of alpha-pinene is that it's a bronchodilator (substance that opens the bronchial area of the respiratory system, helping increase airflow to the lungs). Usage + Recipes
As I mentioned above, one of my favorite ways to use Cedarwood is to help me get to sleep and stay asleep! Some nights I just can't turn my brain off (right now wedding planning is to blame - I think it's a good problem to have!). Four drops of Cedarwood with four drops of Lavender and two drops of Vetiver (optional) usually has me out in 15 minutes. If I really can't stop honeymoon locations and plane costs running through my head, I use the following cream on my chest - I'm usually zonked out about 5 minutes after using it:
- Sleepy Cream
- I also really like adding one drop of Cedarwood and one drop of Lavender to my mascara tube. It's a super easy way to lengthen your lashes (and I can personally attest that this works!).
