I've already done a post about making my own bar soap, but I decided I wanted to try making shower gel. Up until recently I never really used shower gel but I got a free Shower Gel from Young Living for hitting a promotion level. It had a combo of four different oils and it smelled SOOOO GOOOD! So I decided to try and make some for myself.
What you'll need:
- Shower Gel container - make sure it's glass, metal, or porcelain (what I used). Basically just say no to plastic when using strong, potent essential oils.
- 2/3 cup Liquid Castille Soap (I buy mine at Target)
- 1 tsp Jojoba Oil
- 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
- 2 tsp Vegetable Glycerine (this is what makes the gel turn foam-y)
- Essential Oils (you can use any combination you'd like, but I'd stay around 15 drops total)
For my first homemade shower gel I decided to use three essential oils: Lime, Idaho Blue Spruce, and Eucalyptus Blue. Now, you may be thinking, "that's a REALLY weird combination." And yes, I will agree with you. However, I had a very specific reason for using these three particular oils:
Lime because it's my favorite smell - pretty simple reason!
Eucalyptus Blue because I've been working out more (mostly running) and it helps my sore hammies!
Idaho Blue Spruce because it has a 'balancing' fragrance.
So to make it:
Using a glass or metal mixing bowl (I used a 2 cup glass measuring cup so I could easily pour the gel into my container). This recipe yields just under 1 cup of gel, so if you're unsure if the container you're using will hold that much, fill the container with water and then pour it into a measuring glass. Boom. Now you know the capacity of your container!
Start by adding in the ingredients listed above. Once everything has been added, mix/whisk with a metal utensil and pour into your container. Shake a little bit before each use and voila - you've made your very own shower gel! Congratulations you domestic diva!
